If you’re already actively investing in Google AdWords for lead generation and brand awareness, and understand the value it provides your business, then prepare yourself to take it to the next level with YouTube’s TrueView digital advertising platform. The beauty behind the TrueView platform is that it’s fairly unknown to most marketers, including those that claim to be AdWords experts.  As a result, it offers a fairly low-cost solution to engage prospects on YouTube and the Google Display Network (GDN), and for the most part, you are not even paying for each of those engagements.

How TrueView Ads Work 

The TrueView video advertising platform is extremely flexible, offering digital marketers multiple ways of injecting their video content into YouTube and its display partners. If you’ve ever watched a video on YouTube, you’ve already experienced video advertising from a viewer’s perspective. 
 

  1. TrueView in-stream ads – These types of video ads play prior to other videos playing on YouTube or the Google Display Network, and are a great way to generate brand awareness.  Viewers have the option to skip your video after 5 seconds, but as an advertiser you only pay if a viewer interacts with your content or watches 30 seconds of your video, or the entire duration if your video is shorter than thirty seconds.     
  2. TrueView video discovery ads – Discovery ads are similar to the traditional Google Search ads as they appear in various places based on a user’s search or current YouTube experience.  They can appear in desktop and mobile search results, on the YouTube homepage, as on-screen overlay, or next to videos with similar content that a viewer might be watching. They follow the traditional Pay-Per-Click (PPC) and Cost Per View (CPV) bidding model, and the video content must be hosted on YouTube.    
  3. Bumper Video Ads – Similar to TrueView in-stream ads, Bumper ads play prior to a viewers desired video being started, however unlike their counter-part, you’re paying on a Cost-Per-Impression (CPM) bidding model and the viewer doesn’t have the ability to skip the ad. The biggest difference is that the video ad itself must be shorter than 6 seconds. These types of ads are only recommended for creating brand awareness. 
     

At least for now, advertising with video content on YouTube and the Google Display Network is an inexpensive, as compared to traditional AdWords, and cost-effective way to generate brand awareness and engage online prospects in new and different ways. During the “Learning” phase of our video production process we always recommend that if our customers are investing in AdWords, that we utilize the content we’ll be producing to create video segments for online video ads and bumper ads when appropriate.
